The Koiki Company co-operates with the Japanese artists who create traditional, high quality products. These are extraordinary specialists who follow the national tradition and have got great knowledge and a long-term experience in their craft, but at the same time, they produce items that are modern in nature and adjusted to the taste of today’s customers.

When visiting such small, family workshops it is hard not to be charmed by their unique atmosphere. Not only they are located in picturesque mountain regions, at the banks of rivers, but also in areas that have been involved in production for hundreds of years and they astound with their history and respect for values they pass onto generations.

Hiroshi Tomihisa

An artisanal weaver in the third generation, a specialist of development of new patterns and of hand weaving. He manages the family Kasuri Koubo facility together with his parents and his wife. He is a member and an activist of the Kurume Kasuri Safeguarding Association. He promotes Kurume Kasuri also beyond Japan, giving lectures and organising workshops in traditional weaving.

Kasuri Koubo studio comprises the dye shop and the weaving plant. The threads are dyed manually in the natural indigo and with the use of chemical agents. The fabrics are woven either on mechanical looms of the Meiji period (the end of the 19th century) or handlooms. A fine cotton thread used in weaving makes all fabrics really airy.

The studio has obtained several prizes and awards during the annual state contest and the fair of traditional artistic crafts in Kurume.

Takeshi Yamamura

Takeshi Yamamura belongs to the third generation of weavers of Yamamura family. Together with his father Mamoru and his son Kensuke they design and “encode” new patterns on white threads, which are then dyed by hand in the natural indigo. Hand weaving is the domain of himself and his mother - Tsunayo, while his wife specialises in the interior decoration with the use of fabrics produced by her husband. The family members are involved in the activities of the Kurume Kasuri Safeguarding Association.

Their studio - Aizome Kasuri Koubo – specialises in modern designs, while following the traditional production process: they dye the fabrics only manually in indigo and weave on handlooms. The fabrics of Yamamura family have recently gained their own brand - Yamamura Blue.

Yamamura Koubo

Yoshiteru Yamamura represents and owns the family Yamamura Kasuri Koubo workshop and he is the third generation involved in this craft. Yoshiteru along with his wife actively promotes Kurume Kasuri as a member of the Kurume Kasuri Safeguarding Association.

In his facility, the patterns are „encoded” by hand, and so are prepared the threads for weaving. The fabrics are dyed with the use of chemicals. The weaving shop is partially mechanised, but about 20 machines it uses date back to pre-war times. The workshop specializes in the production of a large variety of patterns and colors, from the traditional to modern ones. The application of a thick thread gives their fabrics the look of made entirely by hand.

Several prizes and awards obtained during the annual state contest and the fair of traditional artistic crafts in Kurume confirm the high quality of fabrics of Yamamura Kasuri Koubo.
